Rough Sea 4

Sometimes the landscape of the sea is felt as much as it is seen.

Inspired by the ever-changing shoreline of Pelham Beach, Hastings, Rough Sea 4 explores the energy, movement, and atmosphere of the coast through layers of expressive mark-making and richly textured oil paint. Veering between representation and abstraction, the painting evokes the restless nature of the sea, where shifting tides, wind-driven waves, and changing light merge into a powerful visual rhythm.

Built up over many months, the surface became a record of the painting's own journey. Successive layers of oil paint were applied and reworked using palette knives, brushes, cloths, and even fingers, creating ridges, grooves, and sculptural passages that catch and reflect the light. Each mark contributes to a sense of motion, echoing the constant reshaping of sea and shore by the forces of nature.

While the composition suggests the familiar elements of horizon, water, and sky, the details remain deliberately elusive. Forms emerge and dissolve within the textured surface, inviting the viewer to experience the painting emotionally rather than literally. The result is both a seascape and an exploration of the act of painting itself, where gesture, texture, and memory combine to capture the essence of a place.
