St Thomas Becket Church is medieval and sits on the marshes, surrounded by a moat. After heavy rain it becomes quite difficult to get too and up till 1913 was only accessible by boat. It once served the village of Fairfield which suffered severe population decline during the Black Death and the subsequent violent storms that ravaged the south coast during the 13th century meant only a few farmhouses survived. In 1932 the village was finally swallowed up into larger surrounding towns, leaving this lonely church standing as a reminder of the history that went before.
I'm fascinated by the juxtaposition of the ephemeral landscape and the structural mass - the two permanently intertwined in a dance between geology and human creativity.
